Ricegrowers’ Association praise Farrell for standing strong on the EU FTA

The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) thanked federal Trade Minister Don Farrell for walking away from an EU trade deal that would have hurt the Australian agriculture industry.

The RGA President Peter Herrmann said that while it was a tough decision, the Minister has made the right one for the country.

“We hold a strong desire for a trade agreement with the EU, but it must benefit both sides and ensure significant access for Australian farmers and producers.

“Minister Farrell has stood resolute in safeguarding Australia’s interests, even with pressure from EU negotiators, and for that, we are immensely appreciative.

“While we are disappointed that the EU didn’t come to the table, we encourage the government to keep the lines of communication open with the EU for future discussions when appropriate.

“A trade deal with the EU will take some time, but Australian agriculture has been asking for better access to the EU for 50 years, so we can wait a little longer. After all Rome wasn’t built in a day” concluded Mr Herrmann.
