PM rules out any change to fuel tax credit scheme

Yesterday during Question Time, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ruled out any changes to the current fuel tax scheme.

When asked by Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry, “The fuel tax credit scheme reduces costs on local businesses and keeps grocery bills lower for families. Will the Prime Minister rule out any change to the fuel tax credit scheme, or is this just another way Australian families will pay more under Labor?” The Prime Minister simply replied “Yes”.

The current scheme grants fuel tax credits for vehicles that only drive off-road such as tractors and earth moving machinery.

The Ricegrowers’ Association (RGA) President, Peter Herrmann was elated by the Prime Ministers response. “The confirmation that there will be no changes to the fuel tax credit scheme is a huge relief for ricegrowers and farmers across our nation,” said Mr Herrmann.

Mr Herrmann pointed out that “Our growers have had an incredibly challenging time following the recent floods, combined with increased costs to fuel and fertiliser.”

“Changes to the scheme would have a big financial impact on the agriculture industry which would flow onto the supply chain and then onto consumers,” added Mr Herrmann.

The RGA is a member of the Fuel Tax Credit Alliance, which is a collection of industry groups and organisations across agriculture, mining, forestry, & tourism.

The RGA welcomes this response, which shows the importance of the scheme to the agriculture sector and thousands of Australian businesses.
